For summer 2026, we took it back to the 90s.
No internet. Fun in the sun. Sprinklers. Hotdogs. Backyard shananigans and so much more.
In order to create this same feeling my photos with the Novak family, we planned an outdoor barbecue of sorts. Here's how.
First, communication with my client. We sent inspiration back and forth to make sure we were on the same page. She planned all of the decorations, food, props, and activities to keep the entire family engaged and interacting the entire time. I chose the timing and placement of activities to make sure everything flowed.
Second, editing style. We discussed the feeling we wanted for the entire photoshoot. Our end-goal was to create a very nostalgic feeling. To do this, I made the decision to ditch my typical editing style, which is usually true-to-color with clear contrast, and to create a more film-like edit. To add a film-like quality, I switched my Lightroom profile setting from my usual Adobe Profile to one that I felt suited the film-like look we were going for.
Third, while shooting, I made sure to use a variety of angles and composition techniques - just like I would for any other photoshoot, but I also instructed everyone to enjoy each other's company. They talked and played games as they normally would with minor interruptions from me. I would jump in to move someone into frame better or to create a more dynamic image, but for the most part, any action photos were completely candid.
Making sure we were on the same page is really what made this magic happen!
